Classical Greece Timeline

Classical Greece!

The timeline of Classical Greece, spanning from the 5th to the 4th century BCE, represents the height of Greek civilization. This period began with the Persian Wars (499–449 BCE), where Greek city-states like Athens and Sparta united to defeat the Persian Empire. Athens, under leaders like Pericles, emerged as the dominant cultural and intellectual hub, developing democracy and fostering advancements in philosophy, arts, and architecture. The Golden Age of Athens produced iconic works such as the Parthenon and monumental dramas by playwrights like Sophocles and Euripides. The era also saw the birth of philosophy with figures like Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle. However, internal conflicts like the Peloponnesian War (431–404 BCE) between Athens and Sparta weakened the Greek world. Despite this, Greek culture continued to influence later civilizations. The period ended with the rise of Macedonia under Alexander the Great, whose conquests spread Greek culture across much of Asia and Egypt, marking the beginning of the Hellenistic era.
